Safeguard Solar Energy Choices: Speak Out Against AB 942!
There’s a dangerous bill making its way through the California legislature that directly threatens solar customers. Assemblymember Lisa Calderon has introduced AB 942, a bill that would slash Net Energy Metering (NEM) agreements from 20 years to 10, and even worse, strip NEM status if a property is sold within that 10-year period. This is an unprecedented attack on California homeowners who invested in solar with the understanding that their NEM terms were guaranteed for two decades.
We need your help to stop this bill. If passed, AB 942 would undermine the trust thousands of families placed in California’s alternative energy policies. Homeowners who installed solar panels did so in good faith, following incentives that were designed to help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and lower electric bills. Altering the terms retroactively not only breaks that promise—it discourages future solar adoption at a time when we should be expanding alternative energy, not rolling it back.
Meanwhile, Sacramento is finally starting to confront skyrocketing electric rates, which have made it harder for working families to afford basic utilities. Over the past 12 years, investor-owned utilities have tripled their spending on grid expansion—often without oversight—passing the costs along to customers while raking in profits. The CPUC has failed to hold them accountable.
Now, instead of addressing their bloated budgets, utilities are pointing fingers at solar customers, claiming that producing your own power somehow drives up rates for everyone else. This is scapegoating, plain and simple. Solar customers are not the problem—utilities’ unchecked spending is.
AB 942 cannot be passed. It sends the wrong message to those considering solar and threatens to undo progress toward a more sustainable energy future. Rolling back commitments made to solar adopters undermines trust in all of California’s climate efforts—and opens the door to more rollbacks in the future.
